Fourth Session Added

The year before last the decision was made to add a fourth session to the Summer Residency Program schedule. It proved to be a very good decision. September is wonderful time to be in Ellis Hollow. The woods begin to turn to red and orange, and the autumn chill creeps into the air. The sun is warm and the light is clear and brilliant. By adding a fourth session we were able to bring 20 artists to the colony in 2009. There, in the serenity of the surrounding woods and fields, those 20 artists found the time and space to nurture their creative spirit without the distractions of daily life.
There are some who ask why we are not continuing to offer the Individual Artist Grant. It was only after much deliberation that we decided the colony is the more important focus for the foundation. With the colony we have the opportunity to offer the artists and writers of New York State a place where they can give their work the serious uninterrupted focus it needs and deserves. By extending the Summer Residency Program and including a stipend for each artist, we feel we can do more for the artists. We are presently considering the addition of a fifth session in the future. That would mean the colony would be alive and bubbling with creative energy from April through September. A very exciting prospect, indeed!
