The Greening of the Colony

Learn more about the Saltonstall Arts Colony, The 2010 Capital Campaign, and how you can help make the colony a GREENER place!

The Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts has been running the Saltonstall Arts Colony for over 15 years. Two buildings house the artists, The Main House, built by Connie Saltonstall as her home in 1993, and the studio building or the Carriage House, built in 1998 to accommodate painters and visual artists.  This spring we turn our focus to the first phase of the "greening” of the colony buildings. This phase will entail the replacement of the windows in The Main House to increase the overall energy efficiency of the building, a problem we have been aware of and discussed for a number of years. Areas of wall space that now are glass will be reduced, without significantly reducing the remarkable views of the valley to the south. The new windows will be easier to open and clean, and will more efficiently keep cold out and heat in during the winter months, and keep summer heat out during those months when the residencies are in session. This work will be done with close attention to the appearance of the building, without compromising the overall design.

Our energy bills increase each year and in order to keep the costs of running the colony manageable, we must begin to make these changes. The endowment that sustains the foundation and the colony is stretched to its limits and the time has come for us to reach out to those who truly understand the importance of supporting the individual artist. We need your help and ask you to join us as we strive to maintain the role the Saltonstall Arts Colony plays in the artists' world today, and take the colony into the future.

Past Saltonstall Fellows have said that our colony provides one of the best residency experiences in the country. Over 200 outstanding photographers, writers and visual artists have participated in the Summer Fellowship program to date. For them the Saltonstall experience has been invaluable. We want to continue the tradition, and we want future artists and writers of New York State to be able to enjoy the experience. By making the buildings more compliant with today’s energy standards, we hope to be able to offer residencies for many years to come. As with all projects of this scope, time and funds are necessary to complete the planned changes. 2010 marks the launch of a Capital Campaign the foundation hopes will generate the necessary funds to continue with these improvements to the colony.
